A rise in sexually transmitted diseases can be attributed to the prevalence of online dating in Hawaii to the highest number recorded in decades, officials said.

There has been a significant increase in cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in the state, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

According to the Harm Reduction Services Branch of the State Department of Health, all three infections have been at or near their highest rates in about 30 years.

Health officials in Hawaii reported 7,732 chlamydia cases in 2018, up from 5,972 in 2008. Gonorrhea has more than doubled from 611 to 1,496 cases over the past 10 years. Infections with syphilis rose from 38 a decade ago to 180 cases, officials said.

Further links were made quickly via online dating services with many more users, officials said.

“As people rely on digital means of making connections, it can lead to circumstances where they might be more exposed to infection without them knowing it,” said Gerald Hasty, program coordinator for the state harm reduction branch. “More partners, more chances to get infections.”

The dependence on condoms or prophylactics for protection against the acquisition or spread of STDs has also been decreasing, officials said.

The Hawaiian numbers correlate to the national rates of infection with chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, which have risen in a row for the fifth year, officials said.

The increase is “not desirable, but it’s also not unexpected.”

The three diseases do not cause early symptoms to be distinct or alarming, so those infected have “absolutely no idea,” Hasty said.

“That sets the stage for the infections to be spread,” Hasty said. “Lack of regular screenings or routine screenings contributes to increasing rates.”

Due to the breakout of the STDs epidemic, the need for condoms that detect STDs is on the high side, governments and the bodies associated with these should be keen on getting these solutions in other to cut the rat of Sexually transmitted diseases.

While we wait for these revolutionary solutions to these, we all should be more vocal about using strapping up and asking questions and there needs to be a renewed sense of awareness when it comes to being intimate with a partner.
